January Meeting Recap: A Reinvention Day with Ann Fry

Ann Fry’s young son, Gabe, had seen his mother cry after a hard day at work. But when he took her hand and said, “Mom, are you going to cry every day?” she knew something had to change.

She resigned from the job causing her such stress the next day.

That was 20 years ago. Since then, Fry has been an executive leadership coach, corporate trainer and professional speaker specializing in what she knows best: regeneration and reinvention in life and at work.

She spoke to Freelance Austin in January about how she has turned her life and career upside down more than once – and how anyone can, and probably should, do the same if they’re not happy.

“You are ripping off the world if you’re not being who you are meant to be. Every time you fail to honor yourself, a little piece of yourself dies,” Fry said.

She shared 7½ steps to start moving toward your own reinvention:

Step 1. STOP doing what you don’t want to be doing.

What are 2 things you wish you could stop doing?

Step 2. START doing what you really want to do.

What are 2 things you want to do that you’re not doing now?

Step 3. Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can or cannot do.

Step 4: Develop a mantra to keep you focused.

Step 5: Have a plan for UNCERTAINTY.

Step 6: Celebrate every win along the way and make the whole process FUN.

Step 7: Be flexible and NEVER GIVE UP.

Step 7-1/2: Take on one new risk that scares you.

You don’t have to start big, Fry said, but at least take a peek into some time of reinvention!
